Deputy Director, Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC)

Julie began working at JCYC in 1985 overseeing the agency’s summer and afterschool programming and has since been the catalyst for developing and expanding many of the organization’s current programs.

One of Julie’s key accomplishments was her role in establishing JCYC’s child care services, leading the effort to study the feasibility of expanding into early childhood development. In 1989, JCYC launched Chibi Chan Preschool and Julie was its Director for the first three years, during which time Chibi Chan became known for providing high quality and affordable care.

In the mid-1990’s, Julie became Deputy Director. In this position, she had an integral role in establishing the Japantown Youth Leaders Program. Julie understood the critical need to develop the leadership potential of young Japanese Americans. The program still thrives today.

Most recently, Julie led efforts to expand services in San Mateo County with the Daly City Prevention Collaborative, a program targeting middle and high school students to mitigate the use and abuse of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs.

Julie is extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the evolution of JCYC becoming one of SF’s most successful child and youth development organizations, and is focusing on creating an organizational culture that welcomes and supports the diversity of JCYC's children, youth and staff.
