Yuri Futamura

June 1, 2008

Yuri was born in Japan and is bilingual in English and Japanese.   She graduated from Oberlin College in 2002 with degrees in Politics and Third World Studies. While in college, Yuri spent a semester in Uganda, which inspired her strong interest in Africa and women’s issues in particular. After graduating, she moved to San Francisco where she volunteered with and served on the board of International Development Exchange (IDEX), an organization that partners with community-led organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Yuri joined New Field Foundation in 2003.  As Foundation Administrator, she helped establish the organizational framework, systems, procedures and staffing for the foundation, which awards up to $2 million annually towards rural women’s organizations in sub-Saharan Africa. She is currently a board member of Asian Women’s Shelter, a shelter for Asian women and their children surviving domestic violence.  Yuri was 2007 and 2008 Event Co-Chair of the AWS 20th Anniversary Gala, an annual event that generates much needed funds for the Shelter.
