In August 2008, sisters Wendy and Susan launched a gourmet chocolate truffle company that has been featured in the London Financial Times, Harvard Magazine, and Daily Candy. In 2009 they were awarded Best Chocolatier in the East Bay by Diablo Magazine.
After their parents fled from Vietnam, older sister Wendy was born in a Malaysian refugee camp in 1982. The family settled in the East Bay shortly after that, and then Susan was born in 1985.
Wendy Lieu began her confections career at age 19, selling truffles at the Santa Rosa farmer’s market. Wendy began to travel the world, growing her taste from basic ingredients to more exotic ones. Wendy is the “Chief Chocolatier, and also runs the business, using skills from her years with Accenture as a management consultant. She has professional culinary training and a degree from U.C. Davis.
Susan Lieu is the operations and marketing side of Socola Chocolatier, and has landed accounts with Whole Foods Market, Google, Pixar, Chevron and Zynga. Susan’s diverse background includes extensive community service. After graduating from Harvard in 2008, Susan worked on sustainable cocoa development with USAID in Vietnam and worked with an AIDS project in an African refugee camp. Susan joined the non-profit group East Meets West in January and will be attending Yale School of Management in Fall 2012.
