CATALYST FUND - PAST
RECIPIENTS
Asian American Recovery Services Sister-to-Sister
Conference. In partnership with the California Wellness
Foundation, PAAWBAC provided funding to this conference held
on May 8, 2001, in San Jose. AARS is a substance abuse agency
serving the Asian Pacific communities in San Francisco, San
Mateo, and the Santa Clara counties. The Sister to Sister
Conference helps raise the self-esteem of young Asian Pacific
lslander women between the ages of 13 and 18.
The girls participated in workshops focused on issues which
affect today's young women; health, drugs, alcohol, Asian
women's identity, and empowerment. PAAWBAC provided scholarships
for 250 girls to attend the daylong conference.
PAAWBAC was delighted with the opportunity to support this
conference with the California Wellness donor advised grant,
which focused on encouraging API young women to seek out opportunities
in the field of health.
Peer Education Program, Lowell High School, San Francisco,
to provide a series of health seminars exposing API students
to health issues and careers.
Asian Health Services, Oakland, to hire two API student
interns.
NARIKA,
Berkeley, to develop expertise and programs in the area of
teens and women forced into arranged marriages. Founded in
1992, NARIKA's mission is to break the silence surrounding
domestic violence for South Asian women in the Bay Area who
trace their roots to Bangladesh, Bhutam, India, Nepal, Pakistan,
and Sri Lanka.

San Francisco, to support three at-risk, low-income young

the conscious leadership and action of women and girls.
